Hello everyone,

On behalf of the entire team, I would like to warmly invite you to join us this evening live from NYC via Zoom (7p ET / 4p PT) for our weekly free and interactive tour.

#123 Considering Art: Considering Reflections - featuring urgent work by Merikokeb Berhanu.

Merikokeb Berhanu's (she/her) abstract paintings map out interior worlds that mirror the artist's reflections on the human condition. Interweaving modernist and traditional Ethiopian painting techniques, Berhanu's visual language draws inspiration from the power of the natural world and its ability to give birth to new life. Rendered in fluid forms and cellular patterns, her paintings contain a universe of symbols characterized by a distinctive use of line and color.

Informed by the cultural mores of her hometown of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, as well as by personal narratives, her works reflect on the role of women in social and political life. Berhanu's process involves closing herself off from the urban environments she inhabits as a way of accessing unconscious thought processes. This imagined landscape takes shape in the organic structures and bodily forms through which the artist seeks to communicate beyond words. In her paintings, Berhanu translates emotions into powerful images of fertility, decay and renewal.

In this tour, we embark on some close looking.

Together we ask: What do you see?
