Summary of Work

The Assistant Registrar is a full-time position. This professional works closely with and reports to the Head of Curatorial Services on daily operations related to the production and management of artifact collections records. This position:

·        Contacts potential donors for the museum collections, prepares proposals for the museum collections committee, and is a member of the museum collections committee.

·        Accessions recent acquisitions and create files for donations.

·        Assists with the inventory of the collection at our storage facilities and state historic sites.

·        Assists with data transfer from PastPerfect to our new Re:Discovery Proficio museum database softwares.

·        Maintains quality control of data entry in the museum database records, records filing, and state records systems.

·        Assists in facilitating and maintaining incoming and outgoing artifact loans.

·        Works with exhibit and collections management staff involving incoming traveling exhibits.

·        Provides access to information about the collection.

·        Writes or updates collections plans and procedures.

·        Participates as a team member in divisional long-range planning, collections and exhibit teams, and other agency committees.

·        Requires some travel, evening and/or weekend work, especially as pertaining to outgoing loans. May provide visitor tours.

Minimum Qualifications

·        Bachelor's degree in museum studies, history, archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field and two years of museum registration or collections experience.

·        Knowledge of the principles, best practices, concepts, and methodology related to museum registration.

·        Experience producing and preserving museum records, including potential acquisitions and access records.

·        Familiarity with updating and maintaining museum databases and collections records.

·        Excellent written and verbal skills in working with staff, volunteers, and the public.

·        Self-directed, motivated, and organized.

·        Must be able to lift and move at least forty pounds and delicate objects.

·        Must be able to climb ladders or portable stairs.

Preferred Qualifications

·        Master's degree in a museum studies or related field.

·        Experience facilitating artifact loans (incoming and outgoing).

·        Experience working with PastPerfect or Re:Discovery museum software databases including features such as image management and reports.

·        Experience with the proper techniques to pack and unpack artifacts for shipment.

·        Experience with historical research techniques.
