The Smithsonian American Art Museum is pleased to announce that Dr. Paisid Aramphongphan is the winner of the 2019 Terra Foundation for American Art International Essay Prize. Aramphongphan’s essay, “An Artist in the Secular World: Paul Thek’s Relics,” will appear in a forthcoming issue of American Art, the peer-reviewed journal co-published by the museum and the University of Chicago Press.

 

The Terra International Essay Prize recognizes excellent research in the field of historical American art (ca. 1500–1980) by a scholar who is not a citizen of the United States. The winning manuscript advances the understanding of American art and demonstrates new findings and original perspectives. The prize winner will have the opportunity to work toward publication in American Art, which also arranges and pays for all image rights and reproductions. The winner receives a $1,000 cash award and a travel stipend of up to $3,500 to give a presentation in Washington, D.C., and meet with museum staff and fellows. The prize is supported by funding from the Terra Foundation for American Art.
