American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) workshops are designed for busy professionals, students, and volunteers. All events are open to the public. AASLH members get significant discounts on all offerings.

 

Each year AASLH offers scholarships to four individuals in the history field to attend an AASLH workshop. Recipients of the New Professional Workshop Scholarship and Diversity Workshop Fellowship receive registration fee reimbursement for one AASLH workshop and one year Individual Membership in AASLH. Applications must be submitted by March 1, 2019 to be considered.

Workshop: Collections Camp: Textiles (April 1 - April 2)

Do you have costumes and/or textiles in your museum collection? This two day workshop will focus on the care and conservation of textiles in museum collections.  Spend time working with an expert to learn how to be a better steward of your textile collection.

LOCATION: Connecticut Historical Society, Hartford, CT

Workshop: Exhibit Makeovers (April 29 - April 30)

Interpretive exhibits bring objects, images, and ideas to life for visitors through storytelling, diverse presentation media, and learning opportunities that engage multiple types of intelligence. In this workshop, you’ll learn the basics of exhibit planning, organization, text writing, and design. Drawing on resources of the host institution, working hands-on in small groups, you’ll experiment with ways to make exhibit content meaningful and memorable for visitors.

Workshop: Project Management for History Professionals (May 20 - May 21)

Project Management provides valuable instruction in planning, managing and successfully completing projects of all types. In this workshop, participants learn how to implement internationally recognized project management principles in a history context.

LOCATION: Butterworth Center & Deere-Wiman House, Moline, IL

Workshop: Collections Management and Practices (June 3 - June 4)

Through lively group discussions and hands-on activities, you will become familiar with current issues and trends to better understand how collections fit within the context of history organizations. The workshop will also explore the role of collections in exhibition and interpretation, the basic steps of collections management from acquisition to disposal, professional standards and ethics, conservation on a shoe-string budget, and the many resources available for collections preservation.

Workshop: Creating Programs for Teachers and Students (June 24 - June 25)

Through a combination of presentations, discussion, hands-on activities, and take-home materials, this workshop addresses the elements of museum education and programming needed to create engaging, educational, and successful educational programming for students and teachers. Learn how to craft on site and outreach programming that is meaningful to the education community.

LOCATION: The Bullock Museum, Austin, TX
