I would recommend Richard Faron (Museum Explorer -- http://museumexplorer.com)  Rich is an “old school” exhibit designer, (he does real-life pencil sketches, and models as opposed to computer drawings!) - but has a lot of creative ideas.  He is located in the Chicago area, and mentored me in designing the primary exhibit at the Aurora Regional Fire Museum (Aurora, IL).   He has (is) working with smaller museums and in our case he was great at working within our budget and our resources.  That project was more than ten years ago, yet we’ve been very good friends/collaborators ever since.

Nowadays, Rich and his team mostly design/build educational programing gallery carts -- but I'd encourage you to reach out to him and talk with him a bit about your project.  His full contact is:

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Exhibit Designers in the Midwest

Hello!

I'm looking for exhibit designers in the Midwest who are budget friendly--working with smaller/mid-sized museums. I'm the director for a city museum just outside of Madison, Wisconsin, but I think working with designers in Milwaukee or Chicago, or maybe even Minneapolis-St. Paul would be viable.

Thank you!
Helen
