Please don't write on leather in pencil. The pressure can indent and
inscribe the surface and removing it could also cause damage.

First, tie an acid-free paper tag with the number and/or bar code. That is
safest.

Because of the solvents used for removal applying B-72 to leather is risky
because you could easily remove dyes and patina.

Your best bet, if the number has to be on the object (for leather that is
smooth and not knapped) is to apply a stripe of wheat starch paste as an
adhesive then press an acid-free paper label with the number written in
pencil on it.
