The day BEFORE an employee, volunteer or board member is caught stealing money from your organization:

We have an annual audit. Surely the auditor would notice if money was missing.

We are like a family. We trust each other.

Our director has been with us for many years and she is so loyal.

I’m a board member and I trust our treasurer completely. Well, I think I do. The truth is, I don’t want anyone to know that I don’t actually know how to read a financial statement.

I’m the board president. I don’t have time to study financial reports. Besides, the treasurer can be really grouchy and I’ll do anything to avoid confrontation so I just approve the reports like the rest of the board.

The day AFTER someone is caught stealing:

She was always such a good employee, dependable and so kind. I can’t believe she would steal from us.

The accusation must be wrong. He’s such a great family man. Someone must have framed him.

She is very active in her church and she loves her kids so much. Surely she wouldn’t risk going to jail and leaving her kids without a mom.

She was so loyal that she rarely took a day off from work.

He was always so controlling of our organization’s financial records. But we just figured that was his personality.
