Spring/Summer 2018: Recovering Voices Community Research Program Intern

Description

This is an unpaid, part time internship for the spring and summer of 2018. This opportunity provides

a range of collections-related, audiovisual production, and administrative experience in a

collaborative museum-community program setting. The intern will work primarily with the

Recovering Voices Program Assistant for Collections in the Department of Anthropology at the

National Museum of Natural History.

 

The intern will be responsible for assisting with community research visits and creating a follow-up

digital packet to be sent to the group members. The spring group is coming from the Marshall Islands

and the summer group is coming from Hawai’i and New Zealand as part of the Community Research

Program. The work location will be primarily in the Recovering Voices Office at the National

Museum of Natural History, Washington, DC, but will also include time (or assignments) in the collections at the

Museum Support Center in Suitland, MD. Twenty-five (25) hours per week are expected on a regular

basis and the intern is welcome to add extra hours during the weeks of the visits. Hours can be spread

throughout the week; three 8-hour days are not required.

 

The Recovering Voices Community Research Program makes the collections and archives of the

Smithsonian accessible to indigenous communities who are working on language and/or knowledge

revitalization projects. Most community visits are video recorded to document the research for the

community’s purposes. The packet the intern will be responsible for creating centers around

processing of the video and associated research materials. The intern will also be responsible for

assisting during the research visit. The intern will gain first-hand experience of research in collections

as well as learn about the communities participating in the Community Research Program.

 

Qualifications

A qualified candidate will be a recent graduate or be currently enrolled in a graduate program. They

should be interested in the use of museum collections and archives for research and be detail oriented.

Cultural sensitivity and the ability to work with people from all backgrounds is a must. Knowledge of

linguistics is not required.

 

Learning Objectives

There are three core learning objectives.

1. Learn about the subject of language and traditional knowledge documentation and

revitalization.

2. Learn about the uses and benefits of material culture and archival resources available at the

Smithsonian, and museums in general, to understand the impact of resources in museum

collections on revitalization efforts.

3. Learn about audiovisual documentation, standards for archiving born-digital products, and

post-production of digital video.
