The University Museums at Iowa State University (Ames, Iowa) is seeking candidates for an Educator of Visual Literacy and Learning.
The Educator of Visual Literacy and Learning will develop and implement all aspects of integrated visual learning/literacy programs that incorporate a multi-faceted approach of instruction to Iowa State University faculty and students. Programs will involve in-class instruction, curriculum development, utilization of art objects, as well as utilization of the Art on Campus Program, Brunnier Art Museum, Christian Petersen Art Museum, Anderson Sculpture Garden, and Farm House Museum and their resources. The Educator will work to establish instructional partnerships between University Museums and all Iowa State University colleges and targeted departments, as well as targeted external audiences. The Educator will strategically develop and plan the overall University Museums’ educational programs and projects with the University Museums’ staff, who will also assist in implementation of educational programs and initiatives. This position requires the candidate to have excellent communication skills. The Educator works with the University Museums Director to realize current and future museums goals and supervises the Interpretation Specialist.

The successful candidate should have knowledge in museums and museum education, art history, history, visual arts, public art, communications, and visual literacy.

Required Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of related experience; OR a Master’s degree; OR a combination of education and/or related experience totaling 6 years unless otherwise specified under supplemental required education and experience. Experience must be at a comparable level and directly related to the duties of this position.

Preferred Education and Experience: Major course work in art, art history, museum studies, and art education. Training or experience that demonstrates knowledge of current visual literacy and learning methodologies and techniques and other museum education practices.

Additional Information: The candidate will staff University Museums’ facilities on campus, events, and programs including frequent nights and weekends. The position requires local and occasional regional travel.
