The Management of Museum Developments
In recent years there has been unprecedented building and redevelopment
programs in the museum and gallery sector. Some have been major
‘greenfields’ developments: others have been programs of renewal while the
institution continued to operate.
This conference will examine how such projects can be managed effectively,
while delivering quality outcomes within the restraints of budget and
time. At some time in their careers, all museum and gallery professionals
will be involved in such a project. They are challenging and demanding and
a failure to achieve, and a disappointment by the public with the outcome,
can materially affect the standing of the institution for many years
afterwards.
A stimulating two day conference drawing on recent practical experiences in
both small and major institutions from Australasia, North America, Asia and
the U.K. An outstanding group of speakers has been arranged but there will
be an opportunity at the end of both days for individuals to speak in an
informal session.

La Gestion des Musées en voie de dévéloppement
le 18 au 20 novembre, 2003, avec visites pré-conférence facultatives des
musées à Sydney et à Melbourne.
Endoit: Telestra Theatre, Australian War Memorial, Canberra,
Australie. L'Australian War Memorial a récement entrepris une rénovation
et re-dévéloppement de ses galeries de 35 million $ A., et avec ses
présentations multi-média très innovatrices, il est
présentement l'attraction touristique la plus importante du pays.
Les dernières années ont vu une explosion de developpement et de
construction auprès des musées. Certains ont été de nouveaux projets;
d'autres, des renovations importantes de musées qui continuaient de
fonctionner pendant les travaux.
Cette conférence examinera comment de tels projets peuvent être gerer d'une
façon efficace tout en livrant des resultats de qualité ayant toujours les
soucis de budget et d'echéancier.
Tôt ou tard, la plupart des professionels de musées seront appelés à
s'impliquer dans de tels projets. Ces projets sont des grands défis et
très exigeants. Un manque de réussite, et la reaction negative du public
peut gravement affecter la réputation du muséependant des années à venir.
Cette conférence de deux jours s'adresse à des exemples récents dans des
musées grands et petits. Des possibilités de visites sur place pré- et
post-conférence animeront les interventions.
