The Danish Music Museum (National Museum
of Denmark), Rockheim, Ringve Music Museum

Stockholm | Turku | Copenhagen

Proposals due by 20. January, 2014

The network for
Nordic Music Museums will host the annual conference of the International
Committee of Musical Instrument Museums and Collections (CIMCIM) to be held in
Stockholm (Sweden), Turku (Finland), Copenhagen (Denmark) and Trondheim
(Norway) from August 23 through August 31 2014.

The core of the museum is the collections. But
how are they compiled? And in what way will museums collect musical
instruments, music and related objects in the future? Are we prepared to change our ways of
collecting in accordance with changes in society (globalization, economical and
ecological changes etc)? And has the entrance of popular music as a museum
field changed our ways of collecting? How do we relate immaterial heritage to
collecting?

We welcome proposals for papers and
lecture-demonstrations presenting perspectives on any of the
following topics:

·
The historical collector as pioneer:
reasons, means, and background for collecting
– From private to public collections

·
Do we need more square pianos in the
collection? – Museum collections at the beginning of the 21st
century

·
Popular music in music museums –
Collecting and/or creating the popular

·
Recording museum musical instruments
- Sound collections and the collecting of sound

A panel
session will focus on accessibility to the collection: Museums as instigators – Museums as educators? Contributions are welcomed.

There will be a number of sessions dedicated to free papers. We invite
proposals relevant to the field of musical instrument museums, e.g. presentation
of ongoing projects and recent or planned exhibitions.

Proposals
should be in English (c. 500 words), clearly describing the topic,
including the following:

Abstract
(background, research questions, aims and significance)Name, postal and email addresses, and institutional affiliation of
     proposerType
of submission (paper topic, panel session, free paper)

Paper presentations will be 20 minutes followed by 10
minutes for discussion. Panel
session (6-8 contributors) 10 minutes presentation followed by discussion. The
language will be English. All presenters must register for the conference and
they must be ICOM-members or CIMCIM-subscribers (se http://network.icom.museum/cimcim/membership/how-to-join-cimcim/ ). Please do not hesitate to
contact the CIMCIM Secretary if you have any queries about membership or how to
join CIMCIM.
