Dear ICOM colleagues

Museums of the city as gateways to understanding urban life

Boston USA 30 April - 2 May 2006

The first conference of CAMOC, the International Committee for museums of cities

Arrangements for CAMOC's first conference, organised in conjunction with the Centennial Meeting of the American Association of Museums (AAM), are now well under way. The three themes for discussion are:

1. Museums of the city as forums for the investigation and discussion of contemporary urban issues.

2. Collecting to reflect a city's diversity.

3. The use of new technology in presenting a city's sense of place and identity.

The conference will begin on Sunday, 30 April with an AAM/ICOM lunch. Speakers on the Monday and Tuesday will include Robert Archibald, President of the Missouri Historical Society and author of The New Town Square, Anne Emerson, President of the Boston Museum Project and Byron Rushing of the Massachusetts House of Representatives who is involved with the preservation and interpretation of urban neighbourhood history. There will be papers from a variety of countries and topics so far include

City museums and globalisation.

Museums of the city and urban futures.

City museums in the new city states of the 21st century.

The city as the museum.

City museums as democratic institutions.

The city museum and multi-culturalism.

One feature will be a forum on museums of the city run in a New England Town Meeting style by Dennis Fiori, the new director of the Massachusetts Historical Society.

We are still receiving delegates and papers, but advance registration by international attendees should be completed by 31 March at the latest.

The conference is being administered for us by the AAM. Full information on how to register, on the conference fees, on visas and on accommodation is set out on the AAM's web site www.aam-us.org (Click on Annual Meeting on the home page, then on For International Attendees, where there is a special section on the CAMOC conference). Additional information on the conference and on CAMOC can be found at www.camoc.icom.museum

We look forward to your active participation in our conference.
