Dear Alessandra, dear Colleageas.
Reacting on all the messages of support and the good ideas of colleagues of
ICOM (Gunter Demski's idea is perfect!) Blue Shield the Netherlands tries to
gather money as quickly as possible to support actions of ICBS in Asia. I
contacted Joan van Albada, president of ICBS last week in Paris. ICBS makes
an inventory of historic and natural sites affected by the earthquake and
tsunamis.
But I agree with Alessandra that we should not wait till ICBS has come into
action.
Blue Shield the Netherlands focusses on the problems in Galle (Sri Lanka):
the East Indies Remainders
(VOC) buildings and maritime museum. Because in Holland there are experts
who know a lot about the history of Galle and the VOC-remainders.
We want to give as much help as we possibly can. Also in other countries.

Dear Colleagues,

Plans to disseminate a message of hope and calm at the end of a turbulent
year, now fade when faced with the suffering of millions of people, both
Asians and visitors, following the utter devastation recently wrought by
the powerful earthquake and resulting tsunamis in the Indian Ocean.

The preservation of human life and health, the intensive efforts to relieve
those suffering including those far from home, and the recovery of
communities in the countries of Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, India, the
Maldives, the Nicobar and Andeman Islands, and other communities affected
must be the first priority of governments and agencies both seeking and
offering assistance.

Our thoughts and hearts are with the people of these countries who are the
victims of this appalling disaster. As an organization which seeks to
conserve and interpret the cultural and natural heritage, we anxiously
await news of our colleagues, as well as our sister museums in the region.
Indeed any information of this kind now would be much appreciated.

Please be assured that in the coming weeks ICOM in conjunction with other
agencies, will seek to establish the status of museums and museums workers
in the countries affected. We ask that you now give your attention to
identifying any assistance you may be able to give to the recovery effort.
ICOM will give urgent attention to this critical situation and the priority
of establishing a coordinated relief programme to safeguard the heritage of
the region. Further details will be provided at the earliest possible time.

Toutes nos intentions de diffuser un message d'espoir et de paix à l'issue
d'une année agitée s'évanouissent face aux millions d'êtres plongés dans la
souffrance, Asiatiques et visiteurs confondus, à la suite de l'absolue
dévastation provoquée par le formidable tremblement de terre et les
tsunamis qui s'en ont suivi dans l'océan Indien.

La protection de la vie humaine et de la santé, les efforts intensifs pour
soulager ceux qui souffrent, notamment ceux retenus loin de chez eux, et le
relèvement des communautés dans les pays touchés - Indonésie, Sri Lanka,
Thaïlande, Inde, Maldives, les îles Nicobar et Andaman, et autres
communautés affectées-, tels doivent être les objectifs prioritaires des
gouvernements et des organismes qui sollicitent et offrent de l'aide.

Nos pensées et notre coeur sont avec les gens de ces pays victimes de cet
affreux désastre. En tant qu'organisation soucieuse de conserver et
d'interpréter le patrimoine culturel et naturel, nous attendons avec
inquiétude des nouvelles de nos collègues, ainsi que de nos musées frères
de la région. De fait, toute information de cette nature serait la
bienvenue.

Soyez assurés que dans les semaines à venir, l'ICOM, conjointement avec
d'autres organisations, va tenter de dresser l'état des musées et des
travailleurs de musées dans les pays affectés. Pour l'heure, nous vous
demandons de faire votre possible pour identifier toute assistance
susceptible de contribuer aux efforts de redressement. Sans plus attendre,
l'ICOM va accorder toute l'attention nécessaire à cette situation critique
et la priorité à la mise en place d'un programme de secours coordonné, afin
de sauvegarder le patrimoine de la région. De plus amples informations
seront fournies dès que possible.

Cualquier intento de enviar un mensaje de esperanza y de tranquilidad al
final de este turbulento año se derrumba cuando uno se enfrenta al
sufrimiento de millones de personas naturales de Asia y visitantes
afectados por la devastación ocasionada por el poderoso terremoto y los
tsunamis gigantes en el Océano Indico.

No cabe duda, de que ahora  la prioridad de los gobiernos y de las agencias
internacionales debe centrase en la preservación de la salud y la vida
humana  y que sus esfuerzos deben contribuir a aliviar a los que sufren, a
los que están atrapados lejos de sus hogares, y a recuperar las comunidades
de Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Tailandia, India, las islas Maldivas y las de
Nicobar y de Andeman, y otras igualmente afectadas.

Nuestros pensamientos y corazones están, en este momento, con las personas
de estos países victimas de tal impresionante desastre. En el  ICOM, como
organización que busca conservar e interpretar el patrimonio cultural y
natural, estamos esperando, ansiosamente, recibir noticias de nuestros
colegas y de nuestros museos hermanos en la región, y  por este motivo
valoraremos muy profundamente cualquier tipo de información que nos llegue.

Además, procuraremos que, en el transcurso de las próximas semanas, el
ICOM, conjuntamente  con otras organizaciones, conozca la situación de los
museos y de sus profesionales en los países afectados. Por consiguiente,
les pedimos que intenten  identificar cualquier tipo de ayuda que pueda
contribuir a los esfuerzos de su recuperación.  El  ICOM prestará  atención
urgente a esta crítica situación  y dará prioridad al establecimiento de un
programa coordinado destinado a la salvaguarda del patrimonio de la región.
