A few more questions that have been asked repeatedly off-list and
are therefore being answered here:

1. If you receive a message via ICOM-L that starts with a personal
greeting, you are *not* being sent that person's mail in error.

Responses to messages sent to distribution lists are normally
begun with an indication of the original author's name. Indeed,
most e-mail software automatically provides the necessary info
when generating a reply. Some people prefer to be a bit more
personal and replace the text generated by the e-mail program
("On Sept. 15, John Smith wrote:") with a friendly greeting
("Dear John").

2. It sometimes happens that people do address what are clearly
personal messages to an entire distribution list (at times with
rather embarrassing consequences). Any such message that is sent
to ICOM-L will neither be distributed to the list nor forwarded
to its intended recipient (whose personal address will almost
invariably not be indicated in the message).

Please double check the address to which you send your e-mail
before dispatching it.

3. The search engine that has been installed on the ICOM site is
called "ht://Dig" and is one of the more widely deployed free
software packages of its kind. It is not particularly difficult
either to install or maintain and deservedly has a very good
reputation. More information can be found at
http://www.htdig.org/.

Although the information at that site is highly technical, in
addition to being of interest to anyone considering installing
ht://Dig, some of the material provided may be of use to the
authors of HTML documents.
