Notification for the position of Secretary General, ICOM

April 2004.

The position of Secretary General of the International Council of
Museums (ICOM) falls vacant with effect from 11 October 2004.
Applications are invited for the position.

The Selection Committee will assess candidates according to the following
criteria:

* Experience in the management of large national or international
organizations, preferably in the field of museums or cultural heritage.

* Abilities relevant to enabling the work of the Executive Council of ICOM,
under the direction of the President, in ensuring the implementation of
ICOM's mission, policies and decisions of Council - in co-ordination with
other key bodies within ICOM.

* Administrative and leadership abilities required for effective management
of the secretariat staff (10 to 15 in number) in the preparation,
realization and evaluation of ICOM's programmes and activities, including
their effective financial control, delivery and audit.

*  Initiative and resourcefulness with respect to fundraising (positive and
effective relations with international funding agencies need to be
established and/or maintained).

* Professional expertise appropriate to leading an international
non-governmental body (subject to French Law) and sensitivity to membership
needs in a large organization of more than 18,000 professional members from
140 countries.

* Knowledge of English and French (both orally and in writing). Additional
ability to communicate in Spanish would be appreciated.

Relevant conditions of employment:

* The Secretary General is the Chief Executive Officer of ICOM,
based in Paris (France); however a successful candidate must also be
prepared to undertake extensive travel, as appropriate, in other countries.

* Gross annual salary (subject to usual taxes in France) begins at 65 000
Euros gross, and will increase according to experience.  A trial period of
six (6) months will apply.

* Short-listed candidates will be requested to come to Paris for an
interview on 31 May or 1 June, 2004. Travel and accommodation (hotel and
meals) will be reimbursed by ICOM on the economic rate basis and only on
receipt of original invoices.

250-words goals statement (on what the candidate envisages to do with
respect to ICOM's mission statement if selected), and names of 3
