The Best In Heritage© (3rd year)
Annual presentation of the awarded projects in museums, heritage and
conservation Dubrovnik, 16 - 18 (21) Sept. 2004.

under patronage of ICOM, UNESCO (NC), Europa Nostra, ICOMOS and the City
of Dubrovnik

"The Best in Heritage" is an international, annual presentation of the
best, awarded museum, heritage and conservation projects, now in its
third successful year. Their representatives explain why their
achievements were proclaimed the best, either internationally or
nationally. They do it in three days of attractive programme for the
steadily rising audience, coming last year from 27 countries. Dubrovnik,
a world heritage site, offers thus excellence of prestigious, indeed,
the best professional information and relaxed socialising in its unique
environment.

After a day-trip to island Mljet - National Park, the programme
continues for two more days with the follow-on event "Heritologia" .
This is a unique annual think tank for top practitioners and
theoreticians. They present and discuss the handpicked projects that
point into the future by their excellence in creativity, innovation and
alternative solutions. The aim is quality future for the concerned
professions.

Like any other profession, ours has its class of achievers: the most
creative and hardest working among us! They are the best and most
experienced. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could meet them, socialise
with them, talk to them— and listen to the detailed stories of their
success? The key word is excellence and the right ambition is how to
attain it.

What is "The best in heritage"? The case study, in-depth presentation of
the handpicked choice of the most successful projects internationally.
Awarded as the best nationally or internationally, they would be
illustrating the best professional achievement of the previous year.
Organisers will just let them present themselves and will neither
evaluate nor give awards. The issue is presenting quality in anything
concerning the care and communication of heritage.

Why would one come? If your goal is to give your institution a fresh,
innovative display concept, undertake a major renovation or start a new
project, “The best in Heritage” offers you a unique opportunity to gain
inspiration, knowledge and experience. Those who have already done what
you plan to do are willing to share their experiences with you. These
are people who have learned to make the most of their investment in
terms of innovation, effort, time and finances to produce the best
possible product for their public—exactly what you yourself are after.
You will hear the whole story of how they did it and what they have
learned from it. If you really want to reach top quality and remain
such, this is an opportunity to see how you measure up against a field
of proven achievers. Why bother to experiment, invent or make old
mistakes? There will always remain room for that! The variety of
experiences offered will inspire you: they have been meant to do so.

Whom can you expect to meet besides the representatives of proven
winners and media stars among institutions? Other entrepreneurial and
ambitious professionals like yourself from different and yet similar
fields of heritage care and communication. All of them are
decision-makers seeking the ultimate public value of their professional
effort. There were 112 of them in 2003, from 29 countries attending the
second edition of the event.
The growing competition you face in this field of heritage
communication—be it from other museum institutions or from high-quality
heritage industry—is to be feared only by those who are not well
prepared for it.

HERITOLOGIA - (the follow-on event)
The International Heritage Studies Forum
Interuniversity Centre, Dubrovnik,
20-21 Sept 2004.
Forum is an annual gathering of museologists and their guests, so that
reflection and practice meet. the hand-picked projects point into the
future by their excellence in creativity, innovation and their
alternative ways. The idea remains professional excellence, but the
meeting is meant as the unique think tank and discussion opportunity
among top theoreticians, practitioners and the rising number of
students. Our aim is to become the place where future is forged. The
programme unity is provided by professionals from all sides of the
world, the presentations, the exhibition and by the social events.

In a professional world crowded with so many congresses, conferences,
seminars and meetings, we offer you a simple and practical 3 (or 5)-day
gathering of the best: the best information, the best company,
extraordinary programme— and all that in one of the most picturesque
historic environments in the world: the city of Dubrovnik, Croatia, a
UNESCO World Heritage site.

Sincerely,

Professor Tomislav Sola
