In principle the idea of a Youth Group ICOM is commendable. And certainly internationally there is a perception that there is no (or little) movement in museum structures. There is no doubt much frustration on the part of younger museum professionals, most poorly paid and still most being frequently better trained and professionally qualified than their seniors. This is however a problem that needs to be addressed at a deeper level of museum structures than could be possible in an ICOM Committee, frequently under-resourced with inherent problems of language and communication. Also 40 is not young and young graduates from University programs will as likely be intimidated by those in their late 20s and 30s as by older members of staff. There will only ever be a few cherries on the cake and the competition is always fierce.

Certainly a support mechanism for those recently trained or commencing work in the sector would be of use. But if they are still in need of support in their 30s and 40s I fear they may need support throughout life.
