ICOM has always worked very closely with UNESCO, and was deeply concerned
when the United States and United Kingdom, both founder members, resigned
their UNESCO membership almost 20 years ago because of political and
policy differences between the Reagan and Thatcher Governments and the
policies of the great majority of UNESCO's then 170 or so members. The
departures also had very serious financial consequences for UNESCO, and
through it for ICOM.

The United Kingdom re-joined within a month of the change of government in
1997, and President Bush has now announced that the United States will
rejoin UNESCO "as a symbol of our commitment to human dignity."
