36th CIMUSET Conference
Denmark 2008

25th – 31st of August, 2008
Aarhus, Bjerringbro, Copenhagen.

CIMUSET – International Committee of Museums of Science and Technology

Theme of the conference:
‘Museums and Science Centres in Industrial Society’

We would like to welcome you to the 36th CIMUSET Conference in Denmark in
August 2008. The meeting will start in Aarhus at the 25th of August and end
in Copenhagen the 31st. of August. The theme of the conference will be
“Museums and Science Centres in Industrial Society”, and each day has a
theme, that will be introduced by key-note speakers. We hope that many of
the participants will prepare and give a paper on one of the subjects and
that we will have many fruitful debates and comments. Deadline for papers
1st. of May. Deadline for registration 1st. of June.

1)	Technical museums and science centres in society today?
How are museums and science centres influenced by society in terms of
politics, economics and ideology? What are their functions in society in
past present and future? How can sponsoring be developed and integrated into
the museums? How can museums attract more and new kind of visitors? What is
the future of museums and science centres in the era of communication?
2)	Museums and science centres as informal learning sites
There is a constant need for new learning places in society where children
and adults can develop further knowledge – as life is one long process of
learning. Museums and science centres are categorized as informal places of
learning outside the classroom where the audience can meet scientists, do
their own experiments. How do museums and science centres function as
informal learning sites? What are the challenges and perspectives for the
future?
3)	Museums and environment
Museums are often placed in old buildings and in environments with a
specific cultural history. Museums often support and deal with plans for
preserving old buildings and often the environment of the building is not
taken into consideration when planning is done. At the conference buildings
and their environments will be in focus. How can the cultural environments
and landscapes be documented, selected and preserved along with the
buildings?
4)	Preserving and presenting Industrial Heritage
The year 2007 was appointed the Year of Industrial Cultural Heritage. The
conference will be an opportunity to present some of the many projects and
events that took place in Denmark in 2007, and allow foreign speakers to
present projects, and exhibitions dealing with industry. What are the
challenges and possibilities of preserving and presenting industrial
heritage at museums and science centres?
