ICOM's central Internet server is located in Stockholm, Sweden. Due to
limitations in the availability and speed of international communication
links, ICOM plans to establish a number of mirrors of the primary site
at various locations worldwide. Users will then have the option of
connecting to the most conveniently located site.
The first of these mirrors is now in operation as a part of the
Conservation OnLine service provided by the Stanford University
Libraries in California. The technical problems involved in establishing
procedures for the regular automated transfer of data to this site were
solved by Walter Henry, the maintainer of Conservation OnLine. Thanks to
his efforts the task of establishing further mirror sites will be
substantially easier.
