DEMHIST Meetings, 2-5 July 2001 - Barcelona

From 2-5 July, 2001, DEMHIST, ICOM's international committee for
historic houses, is organizing various sessions, a board meeting and
general assembly, interesting outings to historic houses, and
special dinners during the ICOM conference in Barcelona.

Three themes characterize DEMHIST's sessions:

--"New Forms of Management for Historic House Museums?" confronts
the issues of if and how house museums need to create a new rapport
(in terms of didactics, communication, and management) with the
public in order to reach a broader consensus,

--"Security, Old Buildings, New Buildings, and the Architects?"
treats the delicate matter of how to intervene in historic
structures and new historic house museums for the safety of the
people and the collections (joint session confirmation of ICMS and
ICAMT pending),

--"Relationships Between Authentic Interiors and Assembled Objects"
focuses on a strategic choice which is fundamental to historic house
museums, that is, whether to preserve the house's furnishings and
decorations as they were originally without substantial changes or
additions, or, conversely, to recreate the furnishings and
decorations with objects which were not part of the original house
and its contents (in conjunction with ICDAD).

If you would like to submit a paper for one of these sessions, by
MAY 30, 2001, please send a brief curriculum vitae and an abstract
(maximum one page) describing the focus and content of your paper.
Please be sure to indicate how your paper is relevant to the theme
of the session in which you would like your talk to appear. You may
send your abstract to the DEMHIST secretariat at the Bagatti
Valsecchi Museum by fax (0039-02-7601.4859) or by email
([log in to unmask]) either embedded in the message,
or as an attachment (in Word or .RTF, please).

Proposals will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
relevance to the symposium's themes, theoretical and practical
elements, innovative and useful strategies for communicating the
significance of historical house museums.

Finally, the DEMHIST's conference in Genova, November 2000, dealt
with "Spectacular Exhibits versus Philological Interpretation of
History." The Acts of this conference, concerning the way in which
historical house museums introduce themselves to their visitors,
will be available shortly. For more information, contact
