Dear colleagues,
I am writing to update you on INTERCOM's activities session during the ICOM2013 General Conference in Rio and the INTERCOM Board Elections for 2013-2016.
** 13 August + 14 August: INTERCOM 2013 - Museums and Human Rights
The main INTERCOM session will take place from 13-14 August under theme of Museums and Human Rights. For this reason we are joining with the Federation of International Human Rights Museums (FIHRM - www.fihrm.org) to deliver challenging and thought-provoking sessions. Museums need to learn new skills as the importance of social responsibility continues to grow in museums around the world. Many museums, regardless of size or resources, share similar challenges in dealing with difficult and controversial subjects.
Speakers include: Dr David Fleming, Director of National Museums Liverpool, Prof Amareswar Galla, Chief Executive Director of the International Institute for the Inclusive Museum, Greg McManus, Chief Executive of the Waitangi National Trust in New Zealand, Marilia Bonas Conte, Executive President of the Immigration Museum in Sao Paolo Brazil and many more international speakers. Visit the website to see the full programme: www.intercom.museum
** 13 August: Don't miss the 8th INTERCOM Stephen Weil Memorial Lecture
On Tuesday evening we are delighted to be part of a joint in event with ICOM Austria, ICTOP, ICEE, CECA and together we will be hosting a Special Evening of Memorial Lectures. This year, Luisa de Pena, Director General of the Dominican Resistance Memorial Museum and Executive Director of the Mirabal Sisters House Museum will deliver the 8th Stephen E. Weil Memorial Lecture. Luisa will present an analysis of museums as institutions with a responsibility to treat issues of human rights and democratic values, working with historical facts and their application in the present.
The evening will also see Richard Sandell, Professor in the School of Museum Studies at the University of Leicester, United Kingdom deliver the third Alma Wittlin Memorial Lecture. Richard will explore the social impact of museums, focusing in on their potential to actively shape the conversations which societies have about difference, equality and social justice. Make sure you do not miss this special event!
**Thursday 15 August INTERCOM Workshop - It's all about Vision and Values
On Thursday INTERCOM will hold a special workshop on missions and values. The workshop will look at how museums can advocate their vision, aims and beliefs successfully to their public, staff and external stakeholders. We will look at different mission statements and why they are fundamental to shaping successful strategic planning and effective museum management and what is important for funding bodies. Led by Sharon Granville, Executive Director of the Museum of Liverpool, UK, we will explore how to articulate successful and meaningful mission statements that encapsulate your unique organisation. There will also be input from Te Papa Museum in New Zealand and a museum funding body, the Heritage Agency in Denmark. Participants to the workshop are invited to bring examples of mission statements so we can look together at actual examples in an interactive forum and discuss the political and social challenges museums may face when communicating their values.
The workshop will take place on 15 August at 1:30pm - 4:30pm.
(Venue to be confirmed.)
